stories like Gail’s are more urgent than ever.

THE IMPACT OF BABY DOE

As pregnancy criminalization accelerates in American courts and legislatures, stories like Gail’s are more urgent than ever. Yet, the media and justice system often reduce these cases to sensational headlines, branding women like Gail as “monsters” instead of recognizing their complexity.  As a result, both Gail Ritchey and our other film participant, Emile Weaver, are serving life prison sentences for the deaths of their newborns—reflecting a broader trend of harsher punishment for negative pregnancy outcomes.

Meanwhile, society remains ill-equipped to support young women in crisis, and persistent stigma around unperceived pregnancy continues to fuel these tragedies. BABY DOE sparks vital conversations about reproductive rights, mental health, and purity culture, aiming to stop the criminalization of young women who are failed by the very systems meant to protect them.

BABY DOE reframes these cases—shifting the conversation from punishment to prevention, and from stigma to informed, equitable legal responses.

ENGAGEMENT

Launched in March 2026, our impact campaign engages legal, healthcare, and policy communities—alongside leaders and advocates across disciplines—using the film to amplify existing efforts, shift public perception, and advance more effective, compassionate system responses that protect young women.

We design screenings paired with dynamic discussions featuring the filmmakers, film participants, and experts that educate, spark robust dialogue, and drive audiences to action. The film supports coalition-building events, community resource fairs, campus activations, trainings, conferences, forums, and other related programming.
